March is here! That means we can leave our winter dreariness behind (no matter what the weather is actually like) and begin focusing on springtime. To me spring means lots of fresh, blooming flowers, green grass, 70° & sunny, ice cream cones, walks with my favorite pup, and of course a new set of trends to play with! I've perused all of the fashion forecasts, blogs, and runway shows to bring you a roundup of all the spring 2014 trends you need to know about. For each trend I'll show you examples of it in action straight from the SS14 runways, as well as some more realistic options for those of us who can't afford designer. Get inspired & get shopping!
Full Midi Skirts
(Oscar de la Renta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Creatures of the Wind)
Say goodbye to your bodycon minis and say hello to the new, fuller midi. This trend has been spotted on all the hottest bloggers and has made its way to the runway as well this spring. I have to say, it's nice to see an ultra feminine shape and classier length becoming popular. I've been swooning over SKOT apparel's party skirts and am always down for a little tulle number. (I love the one I wore in my Valentine's Day blog post even though it's a little shorter.) When executing this trend opt for fun, modern prints and textures to avoid looking too "tea time" or old-fashioned.
(Alexander McQueen, Thakoon, Peter Pilotto)
Alright ladies, looks like it's time to start focusing on abs again because the crop tops are back at it! (Yay or Nay??) The crop was a huge staple last summer, so hopefully you've already got a few in your closet to work with. The key to rocking the crop is to pair it with a high waist and keep the midriff to a few inches at most. Also, if you're going to be showing some midriff, you might want to go with a higher neckline like #1 and #3 below. Just be aware of how much skin you're showing!
(Alberta Ferretti, Mary Katrantzou, Antonio Berardi)
Ahh, nothing says springtime like florals!! This year, however, there's a bit of a modern twist to the flowery threads we're seeing. Think bright, bold, and whimsical. (I'm even loving a nice tropical print like this.)
(Giambattista Valli, Alberta Ferretti, Valentino)
This trend falls closely aside the boho look, but with a little more emphasis on spanish flair. We're talking lots of embroidery, light linens, smock dresses, and ornate patterns. I like to think of this look as a modern-day Frida Kahlo. I'm all for it.
(Jason Wu, Fendi, Paul Smith)
Scrolling through the SS14 Fashion Week archives I was surprised by how many nipples I saw. Yes, nipples!! Designers are taking this sheer thing to the next level by sending their models down the catwalk without undergarments, but lets leave that to the professionals. I'd suggest you stock up on cute bandeaus and camis and layer with light, breezy, sheer fabrics. Perfect for warmer weather!
(Roberto Cavalli, Burberry, Dolce and Gabbana)
Embellishments are all the rage this spring! Whether you choose to rock some jewels, gems, beading, or embroidery, embellishments are the perfect way to spice up otherwise boring basics. There's really no rules here, so have fun with it!
(Burberry, J Mendel, Burberry)
It wouldn't be spring without pastels, right? This season, look to your Easter eggs for some style inspiration and add some sweet pastels to your wardrobe. You decide what color you'd like to rock, but look for light, soft hues.
(Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Emilio Pucci)
Looks like gym wear just got a little more fashionable this season. Embrace sporty chic by playing around with mesh, varsity jackets, jerseys, old school graphics, bralettes, and jogging shorts in chic fabrics. There's also lots of sporty sandals popping up. Check out these bad boys!
(Diane Von Furstenberg, Preen, Roberto Cavalli)
Metallics, as well as futuristic holograms, have been in lately and they aren't going anywhere for spring. This is an easy trend, and one that lends itself well to accessories. Pick up a cool clutch or a shiny pair of gladiators and you're set!
